eating/shopping in istanbul
These are some of the places that our families have visited in Istanbul. Feel free to add your recommendations.
If you are looking for a coffee table book of Turkey, this may be one of the best to get your hands on - "Turkey CinemaScope" by Nuri Bilge Ceylan. Many will know him as one of Turkey's most famous film directors, but he is also an amazing photographer.
To get an affordable copy of the book, head to Riverrun cafe in Istanbul (300TL). On Amazon it's selling for over $200. For a look at some of his images click on the link below. http://www.nuribilgeceylan.com/photography/gallery.php?mid=3

One of the best Turkish rugs and kilims stores in Istanbul - Güneş Öztarakçı Carpet & Kilim House (Nisantasi).
I happened to come across it during my exploration around Nisantasi neighbourhood today. The shop stocks a good range of quality items ranging from Anatolian kilims and silk rugs from Hereke (well known coastal town for carpet weaving). Mostly Turkish made rugs. Owner, Güneş Öztarakçı, is very passionate and experienced in the industry. Mim Kemal Öke Caddesi 5, Nisantasi | 0212 225 1954 or 223 1968 or 0532 266 6276 | [email protected] | Mon-Sat 9:30-7pm. Closed Sun. http://www.theguideistanbul.com/location/güneş-öztarakçı Another gem restaurant / bar in Istanbul ... duble meze.. it's at the roof top of the palazzo Donizetti hotel. Just across from the pera palace.. great turkish meze.. excellent view and very affordable . Everything was yummy.
Mikla is a great restaurant in Istanbul if you haven't tried it, just near the Pera Palace Hotel in Beyoglu.

Highly recommend Balikçi Sabahattin seafood restaurant near Sultanameht. Www.balikcisabahattin.com
This bakery, 240 Degrees, does artisanal breads, based in Istanbul but can do delivery by courier - which sounds weird I know but my friend here in Çanakkale has been ordering her breads from them and delivered to her workplace with no problem. We have yet to try.
360 Istanbul is a very hip and happening bar and restaurant with a great view and very centrally located.
