Cannakale
Çanakkale is a town and seaport in Turkey on the southern (Asian) coast of the Dardanelles at their narrowest point and the capital of Canakkale Province. Çanakkale Province, like Istanbul, has territory in both Europe and Asia. Ferries cross here to the northern (European) side of the strait. The city is the nearest major town to the site of ancient Troy. The province was also the site of the Gallipoli campaign during the First World War (1915-16) between the Ottoman Empire and the allied forces. The campaign is commemorated on Anzac Day (25th April) by Australians and New Zealanders and on 18th March by the Turks.
